How Does Fat Freezing Work?

Fat freezing is highly effective on the lumps, bumps and bulges that are resistant to diet and exercise. This amazing technology uses controlled cooling to freeze your fat cells. In the weeks and months following your procedure, your body naturally processes the fat and eliminates these dead cells. Once the treated fat cells are gone, they’re gone for good, leaving a more sculpted you! This fat reduction treatment is the only FDA-cleared and Health Canada approved procedure to use controlled cooling to safely target and eliminate diet-and exercise-resistant fat.

What Happens During a Consultation?

Our Certified Master CoolSculpting Technicians will discuss your goals and determine where to target fat for the best body contouring results. One of the benefits of this procedure is that it can be done almost anywhere we tend to carry stubborn fat pads on the body. Each applicator is designed to fit expertly over different areas on the body. This allows us to target everything from small bulges to large pockets of fat. With precise, state-of-the-art technology, our team can freeze away your fat, no matter where it is! Multiple sessions may be necessary for comprehensive treatment plans.

Our Certified Master Technicians will help you create an individualized treatment plan tailored to your specific goals. The length and cost of your session will vary depending on the number of areas being treated during your visit. Generally, if more areas are being treated, the treatment takes longer to complete. We may schedule additional sessions in order to meet your goals.

Our CoolSculpting Expertise

While there are several applicators designed to fit different areas and accommodate various shapes and sizes, not all patients are candidates for CoolSculpting. Some, for instance, may do better with liposuction, surgery or even a combination of two or even all three modalities. Liposuction, while effective, requires downtime for your body to heal and may not be the best option for everyone – especially for those patients with only a mild to moderate amount of fat.
Our CoolSculpting technicians are Master certified, having taken extended training directly with the manufacturer of the device at CoolSculpting University in San Francisco, California. With this training, continuing education and by having the active support of Dr. Dawes, they are competent in proper placement of the applicators and assessment for referral if a different or more appropriate treatment is necessary.

Is Cool Sculpting a weight-loss treatment?
CoolSculpting isn’t a weight-loss treatment. An ideal CoolSculpting patient is already at the weight they want to maintain, or within a few pounds of their target. Your skin should have good elasticity as well, because CoolSculpting doesn’t tighten skin.
What are the benefits of CoolSculpting?
Removes unwanted fat, treated fat cells are gone for good, you will have slimmer, smoother body contours and it’s a safe and effective procedure with little to no social downtime.
How much does Cool Sculpting cost?
To determine the exact cost of a CoolSculpting treatment, there are three main factors; the size of the area being treated, the number of treatments needed and the applicators required. We recommend to call or email us to book an appointment for a complimentary consultation, you will be provided with a comprehensive quote for the cost of your treatment at this time.
What happens to the fat? Is it gone for good?
The cells are frozen by the process. As a result of this, they are marked for removal by the body as if they were any other cell that had taken damage. These cells are removed completely, and they are gone for good. However, new cells can develop in the same area if the body starts storing new fat.
Is CoolSculpting safe?
Coolsculpting is a safe procedure that has been performed well over 8 million times all over the globe. One of the reasons that it’s considered safe is that it’s strictly approved for only certain areas where the cold has no chance of reaching or affecting important systems. The FDA has cleared it for use on the love handles, thighs, abdomen and chin.
How does fat freezing work?
This technology is based on the science of Cryolipolysis®, which uses cold to target and freeze fat cells, while leaving the surrounding tissue intact. The technology delivers precisely controlled cooling to target fat cells gently and safely. The treated fat cells are frozen (crystallized), then die. Over time, your body naturally processes the fat and eliminates the dead cells; resulting in slimmer, more refined contours.
Is there any downtime?
No, you may return to your usual activities immediately following treatment.
When will I see results?
Some patients see results in as little as 3 weeks following treatment, but the most dramatic results are usually seen 1-3 months following treatment.
How much fat is removed per treatment?
One treatment with CoolSculpting reduces up to 20-25% of fat cells in the treated area. You may need more than one treatment to reach your desired results and get the most out of your Calgary CoolSculpting experience.
How many treatments will I need?
While you will see up to a 27% fat reduction in the treated area after a single treatment, it depends on the person and the area being treated. Some patients will be satisfied after one treatment while others may want to be more aggressive and retreat one to two additional times to achieve further reduction. Dr. Dawes and/ or one of his Master Certified CoolSculpting technicians will work with you to determine how many treatments are necessary to meet your personal goals.
How will I know if a 2nd treatment will be required?
When possible, Dr. Dawes and/or one of his certified CoolSculpting technicians will tell you if they think a second treatment in a given area will likely be necessary. Generally, you will start to see results after 6 weeks, with maximal results seen at 3 to 6 months. If adequate changes are not seen by around 12 weeks, a second treatment may be recommended.
What happens to the frozen fat cells?
CoolSculpting uses cryolipolysis, which is just a technical way to say fat-freezing. When fat cells freeze, they die and are then naturally eliminated through the body’s natural process. Don’t worry: This process happens so gradually; you won’t necessarily notice a difference in your day-to-day life.
Will I have bruising?
Bruising, swelling and tenderness can occur in the treated area. This typically resolves within 1-2 weeks. May persist for up to 4 weeks.
Is it painful?
Some patients may experience some discomfort for the first 10 or so minutes as the tissue is pulled into the applicator, but this will typically subside after about 10 minutes once the skin starts to cool and the area goes numb.
Will the area feel numb after treatment?
Occasionally, patients may feel numbness in the area treated. While this may last days-months, it is most certainly only temporary.
How long does a treatment take?
Each CoolSculpting treatment is different, so it depends on which areas of the body and how many of them you plan on doing. Depending on the area, treatment can be done in as little as 35 minutes. if you opt to do multiple treatments in a session, expect to spend more time.
What can I expect on the day of the procedure?
On the day of your appointment you will arrive, have photos taken and be escorted in the CoolSculpting treatment room where a robe and slippers are provided for your comfort. The appropriate-sized applicator is then applied over the previously marked area based on the amount of fat to be removed and the shape of your body as you are comfortably positioned on the treatment table. The applicator will be placed on the treatment area and there will be a slight sucking sensation as it adheres to your body, followed by that signature cooling effect. During the procedure you may experience sensations of pulling, tugging, mild pinching, intense cold, tingling, stinging, aching, and cramping at the treatment site. these sensations subside as the area becomes numb. We will then invite you to relax with one of our fresh teas or imported specialty waters while your treatment takes place. You will have a call button with you, to call the technician should you have any questions or concern. you may choose to do one treatment at a time or several per day as your schedule permits.
What can I expect following the procedure?
Following the procedure, typical side effects include temporary redness, swelling, blanching, bruising, firmness, tingling, stinging, tenderness, cramping, aching, itching, or skin sensitivity, and sensation of fullness in the back of the throat after submental or submandibular “double chin” area treatment. This typically resolves within 1-2 weeks. You may experience a temporary dulling of sensation that can last for several weeks.
Who should not have CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting is not for everyone. You should not have it done if you suffer from cryoglobulinemia, cold agglutinin disease, or paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria. The CoolSculpting procedure is not a weight loss treatment. Coolsculpting is not for those who are currently pregnant or breastfeeding. As with any medical procedure, ask your physician if CoolSculpting is right for you.
