What Causes Gynecomastia?

To understand how gynecomastia surgery works, it’s helpful first to understand the factors can contribute to it. Common factors are:

  • Hormonal Imbalance: Fluctuations in hormones can lead to the development of excess glandular tissue in the breasts.
  • Medications: Some medications, including steroids, certain blood pressure drugs, and some antibiotics, as well as illicit drugs like marijuana, may cause gynecomastia.
  • Weight Fluctuations: Rapid weight changes can also lead to an increase in chest tissue.

Understanding the cause of gynecomastia can help you decide the best treatment approach.

The Gynecomastia Surgery Process

During gynecomastia surgery, Dr. Dawes removes excess breast tissue and sculpts your chest to a masculine contour. Patients generally undergo either local anesthesia or general anesthesia for gynecomastia surgery.

If your excess tissue is primarily fat, you may only need liposuction. For this surgery, Dr. Dawes creates small incisions around the bottom part of the nipple and performs liposuction. He uses a cannula (hollow tube) to break up fat and suctions it out of your chest.

However, if you have significant excess glandular tissue, Dr. Dawes may perform tissue excision to fully address your appearance concerns, with or without liposuction based on your needs.

Dr. Dawes performs gynecomastia surgery on an outpatient basis, so you can recover in the comfort and privacy of your own home.

Lasting Benefits of Gynecomastia Surgery

Gynecomastia surgery offers numerous benefits to men who are struggling with their chest size. Many patients say their confidence improves dramatically.

Excess breast tissue can hang uncomfortably, causing skin chafing and irritation. It can also make finding clothes that fit challenging. Gynecomastia surgery resolves these issues as well, with long-lasting results. As long as you maintain a healthy diet and exercise regularly, results are permanent.
