Would it surprise you to learn that BOTOX® Cosmetic isn’t just for older patients anymore? More and more, younger clientele are coming in for this very popular procedure. But what is the right age to start?
What is BOTOX Cosmetic?
BOTOX Cosmetic is made from the botulinum toxin, which has many medical and cosmetic uses. It is safe and is FDA approved, and for cosmetic purposes it works by blocking the signals between the muscles and nerves, which makes wrinkles and fine lines relax and smooth out.
Patients love BOTOX Cosmetic because of its many benefits. It takes only a few minutes to have BOTOX Cosmetic injections, the effects are impressive and can last for months, and the few possible side effects (such as bruising, swelling, and discomfort at the injection site) that may come with it are very mild. It is also much less expensive, less invasive, and much less hassle than getting a surgical procedure such as a facelift. Patients report that the injections aren’t painful and that it just feels like a little pinprick; however, numbing cream is available on request.
At what age can you start getting BOTOX Cosmetic?
You must be at least 18 years old to start getting BOTOX Cosmetic. Recently, patients in their mid- to late 20s or early 30s have started getting BOTOX Cosmetic, and other patients don’t go by their age but instead wait until they notice lines appearing.
Beginning BOTOX Cosmetic treatments at a younger age can have its benefits, too. It can help to “slow down” the formation of wrinkles by relaxing the muscles. Over time it can start to weaken these muscles, which means that you may need less BOTOX Cosmetic compared with a patient who starts getting it when they are older – it will last longer and you’ll need fewer injections. However, too much BOTOX Cosmetic can eventually make you look older than you really are.
