Upper Eyelid Surgery

Improve the appearance of, or correct a functional problem with your eyelids.

Restore your upper eyelids. Your eyes are the focal point in your overall appearance. As you age, your eyelids may start to loosen and sag, giving you a tired or even angry appearance. The excess skin on your upper eyelids may hang over your eyelid margin, cover your eyelashes, block your peripheral vision, and hinder eye makeup application. Upper eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) can provide dramatic results, and many patients report that they look more ‘awake’ and refreshed after undergoing this procedure.

Once your goals have been clearly established Dr. Dawes will work with you to compose a treatment outline that is completely tailored to you. He makes it a point to work closely with each patient in order to achieve the look they want. A consultation with Dr. Dawes will be your opportunity to get professional suggestions and an expert opinion from an experienced Board-Certified plastic surgeon.

Is an Upper Blepharoplasty Right for Me?

As with other cosmetic procedures, upper eyelid surgery is a personal decision. It should be done only to help you feel positive about your appearance rather than to fit a particular image or ideal.

Good candidates for upper eyelid surgery are individuals who:

  • Are healthy, with no underlying medical conditions or illnesses which may impair healing
  • Have healthy facial tissues and muscles
  • Are non-smokers
  • Do not have serious eye conditions, such as glaucoma, dry eye or detached retina

How Upper Blepharoplasty is Performed

Dr. Dawes performs upper eyelid surgery on an outpatient basis either alone, or in conjunction with lower eyelid surgery. If drooping eyelids disturb your vision, your healthcare provider may cover the procedure.

Upper eyelid surgery involves removal of excess skin and herniating fat from the upper eyelids. An incision is made in the natural crease of the upper eyelid, so that the small scar remains hidden. Dr. Dawes may also perform fat transfer to the ‘hollowed-out’ areas around your eyes, if indicated, to help restore a more youthful appearance.

Recovery Expectations

Recovery time is about one to two weeks. Swelling is a very normal symptom. The majority of swelling usually subsides after one week, but can occasionally persist longer and may take up to three to resolve. Bruising may be extensive. It will be worst at 3-4 days and may persist up to 4 weeks. Final results appear within several weeks, though incision lines may take up to a year to refine fully. Certain conditions may be permanently corrected with lower eyelid surgery; however, natural aging will continue. Continual sun protection will help maintain your final results.

Upper Eyelid Surgery FAQs

It is best to book your surgery at least two months in advance of the event to ensure all swelling and bruising has dissipated.

Typically, you will need 2-3 weeks before engaging in any strenuous physical activities

Not necessarily (although limiting scar exposure to the sun is important), but you will need to be careful and ensure you protect your eyes from the sun for the first few days.

The final result is not typically achieved until about two months have passed. The incisions are well hidden in the eyelid crease so they are not very noticeable. However, it will take 1-1.5 years for scars to mature completely.

Healing will be faster for patients simply having skin removed than for patients also having fat removed with muscle adjustment. During the first few days you will see bruising, swelling and possibly redness in the whites of your eyes. This will diminish over the next week.
